After Thirty Two Years Paul Hoffman Needs to Know Why.
Paul Hoffman is a Houston lawyer haunted by boyhood memories of murder and suicide. Unable to suppress his memories, and tired of trial work, he gives up his law practice in Houston and travels back to Stockton, Illinois, his original hometown, to search for answers. He is determined to quit the practice of law for good until two colorful lawyers, who had been friends of his parents, lure him into a legal battle which has to be fought in both Illinois and Texas. The clients in the case are too elderly sisters who are the controlling shareholders of a business targeted for acquisition by an unscrupulous and unrelenting, Chicago businessman. The battle turns into much more than any of them had anticipated.

While living in Stockton, Paul also meets Ann McCool, whom he remembers from childhood. She is now the owner and publisher of the local weekly newspaper. With her help and the help of his new friends he is finally able to make peace with the memories which have tormented him for so many years.

The story takes the reader from Jo Daviess County, Illinois to Amarillo, Texas and back again, and it ends with the main characters as astonished as the reader.
